From Elaine’s Journal : January 14th, 2011, Varadero, Cuba
I am sitting in front of the airport on the curb. I have been at the airport since 6:30 p.m. My flight was supposed to be at 10:45 p.m. but something happened with the airplane and it has been delayed until 4:00 a.m. Sucks, but what can I do? The guy at the ticket counter said I needed to call 24 hours in advance to confirm. At first I was really upset because I thought he said I didn’t confirm and the flight was full, so I thought how is it possible? On a positive note, I guess it gives me time to write in my journal. I can’t wait to go home and take a shower. get into my pjs and go into my bed. I can’t wait to relax and then do exercise! lol My body is craving it bad! Where is my Sammy wammy? ahhh, there is a cute dog here in Varadero named Usero. Aww I met him in front of a house that was 100 years old when I first arrived. When I said his name, he wagged his tail. Today when I saw him, his ear was red and I asked why. The man said something happened to his ear and I guess it was bleeding. The poor doggie. awwww
There are people from Ottawa near me. One girl asked me who Che was? I don’t know much except, he was Fidel’s homeboy from Argentina. He died. There are so many pictures of him all over Cuba and he died in Bolivia. That’s all I know. Don’t know much. Should google!
I had a great 8 days here in Cuba, in Varadero and Havana. Two very different places. One being playa, relaxed, just chillin and then La Havana, the big city! This morning I woke up at 9:00 a.m. at Eva’s house. I sure had GREAT sleep at that house. Rodrigo, the 2 year old was crying in the middle of the night. He was sick with a Fever. Julian was sick as well. Last night I slept with my jeans and a sweater on. I think it was in the teen’s but it was freezing! I had my breakfast which consisted of fresh bread, tomatoes and some cheese. The coffee in the home was really good, however it did make me wanna go to the washroom. lol I packed slowly slowly taking my time. My suitcases were a lot less full because I had given the presents to the family.
I took a taxi to Viazul bus stop. Then I took the bus at 12:00 p.m. to Varadero. I walked down the main street from calle 36 to 17 to where the hotel I stayed at the first two nights was. David, the hot 23 year old security guard wasn’t there. I had to check! lol I called him, but he didn’t pick up. That’s ok. I left my suitcases at the hotel for 2 hours and paid 2 pesos.
I ate at the restaurant by the beach. A yummy plate of shrimp skewers, rice & beans and fries. mmmmmm Before that I walked on the beach trying to see if I could see Peter Bones or my other friends, but I didn’t. IIt was so beautiful on the beach. I always cherish my last moments on any beach when leaving and saying goodbye. There is this strong connection I have to the Ocean I can’t explain. Something about it re-energizes the soul.
took a taxi to the bus stop and then took the bus to the airport. I met the Polish guys who thought I was an escort when I first came to Varadero at the airport! lol They were really nice. We spoke about life in Canada compared to Cuba. They offered me some Havana Club Rum which I said no to initially, but then when I heard I was leaving at 4:00 a.m., I took a drink!!! hahahha FML ( fuck my life) I was thinking!!! On the bright side, I get to leave Cuba. Imagine living in a country where you can’t leave? Imagine working at an airport that you can’t leave? It’s plain crazy if you ask me. I think I might fall asleep in the airport on a chair.
