I am going to SKYROS Island as my first destination when I arrive in Greece & I am sooooooo excited!! Skyros is is apart of the Sporades Island group. (Think of the movie Mama Mia, which was filmed on the island of Skopelos just to the left on Skyros!)
Besides exploring it’s beautiful landscapes, it looks like I will be brushing up on my Greek history & mythology. Skyros Town/Chora (Capital of Skyros), is built on a steep hill which at the top has a Byzantine Castle and an ancient acropolis, which is famous in Greek mythology as the place where the sea nymph Thetis hid his son, the famous Achilles, to stop him from taking part in the Trojan War. Oh yah, bring on the history!!! 😛
This past week I have been looking at different ways I can explore Greece whether it be by airplane, ferry, or the local ktel bus for my one month stay in August. Given that I am arriving in Athens at 4:00 a.m., I figured it would be a great opportunity to take a 6:00 a.m flight anywhere. Why anywhere? Well Greece may be in a financial crisis, but Greece is definitely a country not in a crisis when it comes to beauty, history & hospitality! I wasn’t looking for Skyros, but it just popped on my screen from Athens in the flight search engine as though it was inviting me to come!
The two main domestic airlines are Aegean Airlines & Olympic Air when travelling within Greece. My one way flight from Athens Venizelos Airport cost me €22.03 including taxes and fees with Aegean Airlines.
Why so cheap? Are all flights in Greece the same price? According to my online research with Aegean Airlines & Olympic Air most flights in Greece with tax start from €80 and up. Mr. Miltiadis Hatziyiannakis, Mayor of Skyros, AEGEAN CEO Dimitris Gerogiannis announced: ‘We wish to banish the crisis from Skyros, a beautiful island on one of the so-called ‘barren lines’ (PSO) utilizing state assistance and the fact that these lines enjoy special tax status. In 2011 there were just 2,235 air passengers on the Athens-Skyros route. This year we hope to see ten times that number, no fewer than 25,000 travellers, visiting the island with AEGEAN and succumbing to its many charms’.
The offer is valid for all available seats on all flights between 21/06/2012 and 31/12/2012, provided that tickets are purchased by 31/07/2012.
Skyros is not the most common branded island that most tourists think of. Most tourists think of the mass touristic islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Corfu, & Crete. There is much more than these islands and Athens, that show authentic travel experiences in Greece which is exactly what I will be sharing with you in August through my travel videos & blog posts.
Thank you for reading and I hope you come back to read and watch more from my vacation in Skyros Island!
